Did you know that 90% of American homes are under-insulated? That’s an astonishing figure knowing most homeowners are spending way more than they should be on energy bills. See below to find out if your home is properly insulated and be on your way to energy savings this fall and winter!
Do You Have Enough Insulation?
Take a look up into your attic. Can you see the floor joists between bats of insulation? If so, you probably need more. Another way to tell is by measuring. If you only have 2-3 inches of insulation between the joists, add another inch or two throughout.
Air leaks are one of the most common sources for high energy bills in our area and across the United States. There are tons of ways air can escape - through outer walls, windows, doors and other openings - and all of this leads to wasted energy and higher costs. Properly sealing your home and having adequate amounts of insulation are the first line of defense when it comes to saving a few bucks. But there’s more to it than that. There are lots of additional benefits:
- Reduced noise from outside
- Less pollen, dust and pests entering your home
- Better humidity control
- Lower change for ice dams in the winter
