It may be tempting to try and save money on electrical repairs and updates, but you will most likely pay a much higher price later. When it comes to the safety of you and your family, a licensed electrician is the only way to go. There are many reasons that you should always hire a licensed electrician to work in your home, but here are my top 4:
1. Licensed electricians receive ongoing training to both keep them current with electrical code changes, and constantly sharpen their skills.
2. Licensed electricians are also insured. This insurance covers your home during the electrical work. Your homeowner's insurance requires you to use a licensed electrician who, when required, can apply for permits and pass a final inspection by a third party Inspector. This is all designed to protect you and your family from improperly done electrical work, which can be extremely dangerous.
3. Licensed electricians usually have a long list of satisfied clients, so you can ask for referrals and/or view a large number of online reviews.
4. Licensed electricians will write you a detailed, itemized estimate of the work to be done. They usually warranty their work as well so you can rest easy if that light stops working a month after the job is complete. They will not be hard to reach, like most handymen who seem to disappear when the job is done...and sometimes before the job is complete!
The picture below shows a handyman's repair of a breaker in a client's panel. Notice the drywall screw touching the conductor wires! This client had to call a licensed electrician because his lights were flickering and he couldn't reach the handyman who put him in danger with his reckless repair.
