5-Step Residential Boiler Maintenance Checklist

Unlike your heat and air conditioning systems, your boiler is a piece of equipment that is used all year ‘round. With that said, lots of wear and tear can occur, and at any time. However, as the weather begins to cool and temperatures begin to drop, it’s vital to make sure your boiler is in good working order. See below for a five-step maintenance checklist you can perform on your own, prior to your annual inspection from a licensed technician.

Step 1 – Check For Leaks

A quick visual inspection around and underneath the boiler will let you know whether or not the system is leaking. Take note of any wet areas around the equipment.

Step 2 – Check Vents & Piping

Take a look at the system, paying close attention to the flue vent pipe and combustion air piping. You’ll want to make sure all piping is still intact and that there are no cracks, gaps or leaks. If you notice any of the above, make sure you have the pipes replaced right away.

Step 3 – Check The Drainage System

In order for the system to work properly, the drainage system must be fully functioning and fully unobstructed. We suggest placing a bucket underneath the drain valve and opening it up to make sure it’s working properly.

Step 4 – Check For Leaks

A quick visual inspection around and underneath the boiler will let you know whether or not the system is leaking. Take note of any wet areas around the equipment.

Step 5 – Check The Flame

The burner flame should always look the same on a properly functioning boiler. If you notice any differences in flame strength or flame color, contact a professional right away.
