How Often Should I Clean Light Bulbs & Fixtures?

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance… isn’t being a homeowner fun? If you’re anything like us, you probably feel like you spend the majority of your free time doing some sort of upkeep or project around the house. While it may seem like a hassle at times, trust us when we tell you a little bit of maintenance goes a long way. When it comes to your lighting however, maintenance shouldn’t take all that long and you’ll likely be paid back exponentially for every minute you put in!

When it comes to cleaning your light bulbs and the fixtures that house them, we recommend making a schedule. It doesn’t have to be elaborate and you don’t even need to plan it out day by day. In fact, most lighting maintenance can be done one a week or even less often.

Here’s how you can start planning:

Weekly: there are definitely a few fixtures in your home that will require some maintenance once a week. Think about the ones that tend to collect dust and cobwebs most frequently — those typically located on ceiling fans in addition to downlights and semi-flush lights.

If you start doing maintenance on these bulbs and fixtures weekly, you’ll actually spend less time per session cleaning. All you need to do is wipe them down with a soft microfiber cloth or a long-handle duster.

Biannually: most other fixtures in and around your home (both indoors and out) only require maintenance about twice a year. You can certainly handle that, right? These bulbs and fixtures include chandeliers, and larger ceiling lights, in addition to outdoor sconces, deck and patio lights.

We suggest building this maintenance into your spring and fall cleaning — when you’re geared up and ready to get to work as is!

Pro Tip: keep in mind that a dirty bulb can actually suck up more energy in an attempt to shine as brightly as it should be. For this reason, it’s vital to remove those caked-on layers of dust and let that light shine!
