The Do's and Don'ts of Using an Electric Blanket

Is there anything better than snuggling up with a warm, cozy blanket on a chilly day? Not if you ask us. But that warm, cozy blanket can quickly turn into a nightmare in real life if you don’t ready the following before you plug yours in. After all, there’s lots that can go wrong in a hurry when it comes to electrical (heated) blankets.

DO

Pay close attention to the label on the blanket. Make sure it has been tested by a nationally recognized testing facility and that it’s labeled for indoor use. It’s also a good idea to go online and perform a quick search to make sure there are no recalls out there for your blanket.

DON’T

Get too close to your blanket for too long. Anything that is powered by electricity comes along with a magnetic field and magnetic fields have been said to cause health defects like cancer. Although it has not yet been confirmed, it’s best to limit exposure.

DO

Try to keep the blanket as flat as possible while using it. Wrapping tightly around yourself can cause certain areas to trap heat and therefore cause overheating.

DON’T

Forget that your blanket is plugged in. Always remember to unplug it well before you fall asleep. Leaving it on for extended periods of time can cause severe burns or even fires.

DO

Look for a blanket with an automatic shutoff or timer while shopping for an electric blanket. This is especially helpful for those who tend to forget things often.

DON’T

Run the electrical cord under a mattress or carpet. Doing so could cause added friction which can cause the cord or the blanket to overheat.
