You definitely don’t want to be caught in the dead of summer without a functioning air conditioner, right? Is there anything worse than coming home to steamy house after a long day’s work? We think not. But how do you know when it’s time to replace that old system to avoid being left out in the heat? We’ve got a few things to keep an eye out for, below!
Your System’s Age
This is one of the most important factors, aside from anything blatantly wrong or out of place. Air conditioning systems are only designed to operate for about 10-15 years.
Chances are, if your system is approaching 10 years old, it will be more cost-effective to have the system replaced entirely, than to keep making repairs each year to keep it working.
You Built an Addition or Extra Rooms
In some cases, your existing air conditioning system can be extended to reach additional rooms or areas of the house that may not have been there when the system was originally installed. However, lots of times, it’s simply not possible to have a current system adequately cool said areas and therefore, a new system may be needed.
Another common option is to have a ductless hvac system installed in these areas of the house to accompany your current cooling system.
Your Monthly Utility Bills Are Skyrocketing
Small fluctuations in price each month are normal, but if you’re experiencing drastic fluctuations, especially during the summer months, it may be time to consider upgrading to a more energy efficient system.
After all, older systems were not designed to keep up with today’s energy demands and could be costing you a fortune as a result.
Your System Requires Frequent Repairs
If you’ve needed your system repaired 2 or more times in the last 10 years, it’s probably smart to have it replaced. On top of that, if any current problems are extensive (the blower motor, the compressor or the condenser coils), it could actually cost you more to repair these components than it would to replace the whole system.
